Desktop Computers
Laptops continue to be popular with consumers, but retail computer prices have dropped to such a degree that many households prefer to have multiple computers in their home, usually a desktop system and a laptop. Many “early adopters” like to sell their old computer systems online in order to justify the purchase of the latest and greatest computing technology — which is great news for bargain-minded shoppers, but not necessarily for you. Before agreeing to sell an older desktop computer online, research the specific model to be certain it is valuable.

Research Resources

If you don’t know all the item details, check the manufacturer’s website; they often have product catalogs online that list detailed specifications.

Visit the website at http://reviews.cnet.com/ for product reviews for desktop systems that are not more than one or two years old.

Condition & Testing

Computers should be tested before being listed (some units can be sold “as-is” for parts, but sale prices are generally low). Testing can be very time-consuming and involved; if you plan to sell a lot of computers, consider setting up a special testing station with a spare CPU, monitor, and peripherals.

Things to test:

  • Power on/off
  • Monitor works (if included)
  • Keyboard and mouse work
  • CD drive reads and ejects CDs
  • Sound card and speakers work
  • OS loads and runs properly

Online marketplaces prohibit the sale of computers with installed software that didn’t come with the computer. Ask the owner what software came with the machine. If available, include the original installer discs with the item.

Make sure that all passwords and personal data have been deleted from the computer, and that the trash has been emptied.

Finally, make sure that the computer has a legible serial number (thieves will often remove or deface this before selling a stolen unit). If the serial number has been removed or if the item has an asset tag (sticker that says it belongs to a company), thoroughly investigate the item before agreeing to sell it.

Key Details

Include these details in your listing:
  • Brand
  • Model name/number
  • Processor type and speed
  • Memory (RAM and hard drive)
  • Features (DVD/CD, Firewire, etc.)
  • Accessories (monitor, keyboard, speakers, external drives, etc.)
Storage and Shipping

Whenever possible, use the original packaging. Computers should be stored in a well-ventilated room, away from children, pets and smoke. Don’t place an item next to heating vents or air conditioners, either, since temperature/humidity changes can cause damage.

Desktops should be double-boxed and insured for protection during shipment. Use the original packaging whenever possible to store and ship desktop systems. If the original packaging is unavailable, use boxes made of a durable corrugated cardboard and use a cushioning material, on all six sides, to protect the computer from shock. Foam is best, but bubble wrap can be used as a substitute. Do not use styrofoam, peanuts, or popcorn in the inner box. Remove all accessories, including cables, wrap them separately and place them in the box away from the computer.
