How to Write a Detailed Item Description

Introduction

A well-written description not only gives buyers valuable information, it also shows that you're a conscientious seller.

Step 1: Answer Buyer Questions Before They’re Asked

Here is a list of some of the specifics that need to be addressed in item descriptions. Of course, the details you provide depend on the type of item you are listing.

    • What is the item?
    • What condition is it in?
    • What company/artist/designer/author made it?
    • What material is it made of?
    • When was it made?
    • What are its dimensions?
    • What country/location is it from?
    • Does it have any notable features or markings?
    • Does it have a special background or history?

Step 2: Add a Personal Touch

You may also want to consider adding a creative touch when writing your item description by adding:

    • What do you like about the item?
    • Who you think it would appeal to and why?
    • Is there an interesting story about the item?
    • How do you think it might be used?

Step 3: Include Relevant Keywords in Your Product Description

Include relevant keywords and power words that will motivate the potential buyer to make a bid and buy your product. Stress any product benefits and use active and enthusiastic language. Examples: Time-saving, ease-of-use, money-saving, etc. The description should refer to the listing’s photos, which are the most persuasive element of your item listing. Stress any product benefits and use active and enthusiastic language.

Step 4: Tailor the Product Description for the Internet

Make your item description as complete as possible. However, make each sentence short - web page readers like to scan text. If your description is easy-to-read, potential buyers will keep reading until they have all the information they need. This will also minimize the number of email questions you will receive and save you time in the long run.

The description should refer to the listing’s photos, which are the most persuasive element of your item listing. Stress any product benefits and use active and enthusiastic language.

    Example: Robert Lee Gold Necklace
“Robert Lee Morris has found immense success through creating whimsical pieces inspired by nature and the world around him. Curvaceous lines with hammered textures or sleek details create his organic forms that translate beautifully into wearable pieces of art. This stunning _______ necklace is from the ________ Collection. Glistening 18k gold sets the perfect stage to showcase the masterful craftsmanship. Perfect for making a bold and dramatic statement, this necklace exudes classical beauty and timeless style.”

    Step 5: Spell Check

Look professional and make sure that you haven’t made any spelling errors.

Tips

  • Make your item description as complete as possible
  • Honestly represent any issues with the item. Be accurate in noting any flaw with the item so the buyer is not surprised when they receive the item.
  • Include popular, often searched for, abbreviations.
