Translate your way to an income
According to data from the 2000 U.S. Census, about 47 million people in the U.S.
speak a language other than English at home. As a result, private companies as well
as federal and state government agencies are incented to use translators to effectively
communicate with these non-English speaking residents.
The average freelance translator working full time in the U.S. earns more than $50,000
a year, according to a recent American Translators Association compensation survey.
Gaining experience with clients and credibility are key to a translator’s success.
To gain credibility as a translator or interpreter, you may consider getting proof
of language proficiency through a certified test conducted by the
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
One option for translators is the translation of documents.
The American Translators Association, a professional group with nearly 10,000
members, offers a certification program for document translation. Another option
for translators is telephone interpreting. For instance, telephone interpreters
take 911 emergency calls when someone’s life is in danger.
